Silverware
Tokyo has been producing quality silverware for a long time, including kitchen utensils and dishes. Just like the last interview, we had a chance to talk to Mr. Soutatsu Kamikawa, who is a certified traditional craftsman of silverware. This time, he taught us about his silverware series “SenzaFine”

The Never Ending Passion
“SenzaFine” is a series of silverware Soutatsu created for the LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT2018. One of the most interesting aspects of this silverware is that it’s designed to sway when it’s empty, but it stabilizes the glass when a drink is poured into it. If you look inside the cup, you can see it shining like kaleidoscopes, giving you the feeling of looking into a treasure box. Soutasu explained to us about the philosophy behind the craft.
Senzafine means “Never Ending” in Italian. I wanted to create something that will be used for generations to come, for hundreds of years. It’s very playful and has many characteristics of silver in it. The playfulness is the heart of Edo. Watching it sway and enjoying it visually is very important. Pour a drink into the cup and watch it shine like kaleidoscopes.
Just like the slogan, SenzaFine can be enjoyed from the eyes to the tongue. What was his motive to create this ?
Personally, I want to enjoy my drinks as much as I can. The element of “enjoying” a drink can come from more than just taste. The visuals, how it feels on the tongue, the five senses, your physical condition, temperature, and etc. They all buy in to the whole experience. Communication is also born when people are gazing at the swaying glass. It tastes better when you are drinking with your precious ones. Those experiences are very important when enjoying drinks
Soutatsu states. But thats not the only reason why he focuses on the “enjoying” part. Making people interested in silverware itself is one of his missions, so creating something that the people would want to try out became his passion.
After the interview, he let experience how the silver spoon can transfer heat. Our body temperature transfers through the silver spoon, which makes it easier to cut through freezing ice. The way the spoon divided the ice almost felt like a knife cutting through butter and we were amazed how one utensil can change the whole experience.
